South Africa will be without one of their key players.
South Africa will have to do without Duane Vermeulen for their opening Rugby Championship fixture against Argentina next weekend.
The big number eight injured his knee during Toulon’s pre-season friendly against Toulouse on Friday night. Vermeulen underwent an MRI scan after the game, and is scheduled to have surgery next week.
The news will anger the Springboks, who have previously been scorned by Mourad Boudjellal for daring to include the likes of Vermeulen and Bryan Habana in the South African squad.
Indeed, as the knee injury sustained by the number eight is a recurrence of a previous issue, Springbok fans would be forgiven for wondering why Vermeulen selected to play in a friendly when he was set to miss the opening weeks of the Top 14 season due the Rugby Championship.
It is not yet known for how long the 30 year old will be out of action. As a result, Allister Coetzee will wait until after South Africa’s opening Rugby Championship fixture with Argentina before deciding to call up a replacement.
