The Rumoured Irish XV To Face South Africa In The Third And Final Test

Joe Schmidt is set to make a number of changes.

Writing in the Irish Times this morning, Gerry Thornley has reported Joe Schmidt is set to revert to the core of the side that famously beat South Africa in the first test earlier this month.

Although injury has ruled out Robbie Henshaw and could see Jared Payne miss out on selection, Schmidt is likely to to return the likes of Mike Ross, CJ Stander and Jordi Murphy to the starting XV. Changes are also expected to be made on the bench, where Ultan Dillane, Sean Cronin and possibly even Eoin Reddan could be recalled.

This would see the unfortunate Tadhg Furlong dropping out of the starting XV, despite his impressive scrummaging performance last weekend. However Tiernan O’Halloran is expected to make his debut as a result of Henshaw’s injury and the concerns surrounding Payne.

If Payne is forced to withdraw, Schmidt is likely to select to both Stuart Olding and Luke Marshall in midfield, with Keith Earls offering midfield cover from the wing.

Indeed, the composition of the entire backline is dependent on the fitness of Payne. Nevertheless, if the Ulster player is passed fit, he is expected to start in midfield.

Reported Irish XV:

  1. Jack McGrath
  2. Rory Best
  3. Mike Ross
  4. Devin Toner
  5. Iain Henderson
  6. CJ Stander
  7. Jordi Murphy
  8. Jamie Heaslip
  9. Conor Murray
  10. Paddy Jackson
  11. Andrew Trimble
  12. Stuart Olding
  13. Jared Payne / Luke Marshall
  14. Keith Earls
  15. Tiernan O’Halloran
