Toulouse have moved to replace Census Johnson.
Although Toulouse once again find themselves contesting the Play off phase of the Top 14, they are no longer the kingpins of French rugby.
Despite possessing the largest budget in French rugby, in excess of €30 million according to Rugbyrama, the four time European Champions have struggled to compete with Toulon, Clermont and Racing 92 in recent seasons.
However, under Ugo Mola, the aristocrats of French and European rugby are beginning to rebuild their squad. This summer alone will see stalwarts such as Vincent Clerc, Imanol Harinordoquy, Clement Poitrenaud, Corey Flynn either retire or leave the club.
In their place, Toulouse have announced the signing of Richie Gray, Leonardo Ghiraldini and Sofiane Guitoune. However with Census Johnson coming toward the end of his career, Mola has also been on the lookout for a tighthead.
That search appears to have come to end, after regional publication, La Depeche, reported Toulouse have signed Charlie Faumuina.
Although the monster 127 Kg prop will not arrive until the beginning of the 2017-18 season, Faumuina’s capture represents a coup for Toulouse. Indeed, last month we reported on the fact that Clermont were competing for the signature of the 33 times capped All Black.
While Faumuina has spent much of his career behind Owen Franks in the All Black pecking order, his loss will still represent to blow. Steve Hansen has used the tighthead to great effect from the bench, unleashing the big tighthead at tiring defences.
