The guessing game will finally stop on Wednesday morning when Lions tour manager John Spencer will announce the 37-man initial squad for this summer’s tour.
Twelve years ago, it was much easier to make the cut with 44 players chosen to travel to New Zealand while three further Englishmen were asked to prove their fitness before the trip.
Only one of that trio ended up playing.
Sir Clive Woodward, having led the Red Rose to the World Cup two years prior, was chosen as head coach. He was heavily criticised when the squad was announced due to the makeup of the group with 20 English players, 11 Irishmen, 10 Welshmen and three Scots selected despite the poor recent form of the World Cup winners. Wales also felt hard done by considering their grand slam win in ’05.
To be clear, we’re asking for the 44 that were chosen originally and the late addition.
