Fiji were last night crowned Olympic Champions.
Even the most die hard team GB fan appreciated the significance of Fiji’s triumph last night. Even before the game, stories emerged detailing how some of their players turned down lucrative contracts in order to represent the island nation at the Olympics.
Although some questioned whether or not the weight of expectation might get the better of Fijian players, from the first whistle they seemed to take it upon themselves to not only win gold, but emphatically do so.
Team GB were simply no match for Fiji’s skill in attack or physicality in defence. However, above all else, the passion and humility displayed by the Fijian players won them fans throughout the sporting world.
Therefore it was unsurprising to see three Fijian’s named in the team of the tournament.
Alongside Osea Kolinisau, Semi Kunatani and Josua Tuisova, were team GB’s James Davies and Daniel Bibby, South Africa’s Kyle Brown and Japan’s Lomano Lemeki.
The team was voted for by members of the public on World Rugby Sevens’ website.
