Ronan O’Gara Throws Simon Zebo’s Mooted Racing 92 Move Into Doubt

Munster’s Simon Zebo had seemingly been all lined up for a move to Racing 92 next summer – but Ronan O’Gara says that this is far from certain.

Zebo announced this week that he would be leaving the province at the end of the current campaign – with subsequent media reports joining up the dots and alleging that he would be joining up with O’Gara in the Top 14 next year.

However, writing in his Irish Examiner column on Friday morning, the Racing assistant coach claims that his club are one of just a number of sides chasing the 27-year-old back – but that a move to France itself is pretty-much nailed on:

“This is awkward. There seems to be a presumption that Simon Zebo is moving from Munster to Racing 92 next season,

This much I know. Simon Zebo will move to France’s Top 14 after this season. Yes, we are in the frame.  But this is a fast-moving story and as late as last night I was told there are four Top 14 clubs seriously interested in acquiring his services and more than willing to flash the cash to do so.

“Until his club of choice says he’s coming. until Simon signs something, there are no other facts I can confirm. I’m not being clever. Racing want Zebo, but until someone tells me otherwise, it’s no done deal.”

Ireland coach Joe Schmidt and the IRFU have reacted to Zebo’s decision to leave the country at the end of the season by leaving the 27-year-old out of the squad for the upcoming Autumn test series – suggesting that it could be some time before the player ever again plays for his country (if, indeed, he ever does play for Ireland again).
