Ronan O’Gara Set For Surprise Move To New Zealand [Report]

Racing 92 assistant coach Ronan O’Gara could be set for a move to Super Rugby, according to a report on Friday morning.

The Irish Examiner have reported that defending champions Canterbury Crusaders have lined the former Irish international up as assistant to head coach Scott Robertson from next year.

Indeed, they have cited an IRFU source who claimed that O’Gara was “99% certain to take the plunge” and move to the Southern Hemisphere in 2018.

The move, should it come to fruition, would be another milestone in O’Gara’s coaching career. The 40-year-old move to Racing 92 in 2013 almost immediately after hanging up his boots with Munster. Since then, he has regularly been linked with moves back to Ireland (including tentative rumours surrounding the Munster head coach position when it has become available).

Neither Crusaders nor Racing have commented yet (nor indeed has O’Gara despite his position as a columnist for the Examiner) but expect that to come in due course if the move is coming to fruition.

The report goes to on to claim that O’Gara’s potential departure would not have a knock-on effect for Simon Zebo’s likely move to Racing 92, with the Munster back set to join the Top 14 club next summer.
