George North Hits Back As Northampton Saints Row Escalates

Northampton Saints wing George North has reportedly expressed discontent at his treatment by interim coach Alan Gaffney.

The Welsh international sat out last weekend’s Premiership defeat to Sale Sharks, with Gaffney suggesting that North didn’t want to play in the fixture despite his release from the Wales 6 Nations camp.

BBC Sport have reported on Monday that North now feels like he has been “hung out to dry” by Gaffney, citing a deal he had made with former Northampton boss Jim Mallinder that he wasn’t obliged to play in Premiership matches during the 6 Nations rest week.

Gaffney, it would appear, didn’t get the memo about that agreement and was therefore disappointed when North didn’t make himself available for the game in what will almost certainly be painted as crossed wire in communication between all parties. The 25-year-old will return to the Welsh camp this week as Warren Gatland’s side look to end this year’s championship on a high in their matches with matches against Italy and France still to come.

Saints are currently struggling in the Premiership, sitting in tenth place in the table and some distance behind even the playoff spot they scraped into at the end of last season.

North, meanwhile, will not be at Franklin’s Gardens for much longer, having already agreed to return home to Wales on a National Dual Contract from the beginning of next season.
