Australia fans could be set to lose one of their favourite players.

With the Rugby Championship set to get underway on the same day as the new Top 14 season, French clubs are racing to sign players on short term contracts to replace the superstars they will lose during the opening months of the new campaign.

Indeed, despite protests from the owners of clubs such as Bordeaux Begles and Toulon, the likes of Adam Ashley-Cooper and Duane Vermeulen will represent Australia and South Africa later this month.

Such was the outcry from Bordeaux’s President, in an interview with Rugbyrama, Laurent Marti claimed Ashley Cooper had promised to turn his back on international selection.

Although Marti’s also let it be known that he was not impressed by the manner in which the Wallabies dealt with Sekope Kepu’s return to Australia earlier this summer, it is somewhat ironic that Midi Olympic this morning linked Bordeaux with a move for Nick Cummins.

While the honey badger is one of Australia’s most loved players, he is some way down Michael Cheika’s pecking order, and could be open to a short term move to the Top 14.
