Munster Confirm The Signing Of Former Springbok Flanker

Munster have confirmed the signing of London Irish back row Arno Botha.

The 26-year-old will join up with the province from London Irish for the 2018/19 season, pending international clearance.

Botha, who can operate at number eight as well as flanker, joined Irish in January of this year, going on to make seven appearance in a Premiership season that ultimately ended in the disappointment of Premiership relegation for the club.

Prior to that move, he had spent his career in his native South Africa with Blue Bulls.

Internationally, he captained the South Africa U20 side in the 2011 IRB Junior World Championship. being named South Africa U20 player of the year that same year. He went on to make two senior appearances for the Springboks in 2013, the second of which ended in frustration as he had to be taken off after just five minutes with a knee ligament injury.

Speaking to the Munster website, coach Johann van Graan expressed his excitement at having Botha on board for next season:

“In building our squad for next season I believe Arno will be a great addition to our side, adding further depth and strength to our back row options.

“From my time with the Bulls and South Africa I have first-hand experience of what Arno is capable of. A physical ball carrier and lineout jumper, he leads by example with his work-rate, commitment and physicality, and we look forward to welcoming him to the province.”
