Australia are sweating on the fitness of three key players.
Australia could be without David Pocock, Israel Folau and Scott Sio for their World Cup Semi Final showdown with Argentina. The news was broken by Georgina Robinson in the Sydney Morning Herald last night.
Robinson reported that while Pocock engaged in some running on Tuesday, the influential flanker was confined to a stationary bike yesterday. Although Pocock was expected to return for this weekend’s game after picking up a calf strain in the Wallabies final pool game against Wales, Cheika and his coaching staff are becoming increasingly pessimistic over the flanker’s availability. Nevertheless Pocock will be given one final opportunity to prove his fitness tomorrow.
Fullback Israel Folau is also a doubt after only training for ten minutes yesterday before coming off to ice his ankle. While Scott Sio completed a restricted training session yesterday, he finished his day in an ice bath.
Although Ben McCalman has impressed many commentators, the Wallabies will miss Pocock’s influence at the breakdown against Argentina’s big back row.
Likewise, Scott Sio’s absence in the front row could prove detrimental, with the Puma scrum looking very aggressive against Ireland. Folau’s injury could also see Kurtley Beale retained this weekend.
