In the age of the internet, Italy prop Martin Castrogiovanni should have known better than to lie to his club.

The 34 year old missed his Racing’s Champions Cup semi final victory against Leicester last weekend, having told the French side that he had had to return home to Argentina for a private family matter.

Imagine their surprise, then, when pictures surfaced online of the former Toulon player partying with members of the Paris Saint-Germain football squad – including superstar Zlatan Ibrahimović – in Las Vegas, when he was supposed to be roughly 6,000 miles away.

Unsurprisingly, the Parisian side have taken a dim view of the incident and suspended the player pending an investigation.

In a statement, the French club said:

“Following the publication in the media of that day of photographs showing Martin Castrogiovanni footballers in the company of Paris Saint Germain this weekend at a hotel in Las Vegas, while the entire membership of the club was in Nottingham to contest a semi-final European Cup, Racing 92 decided to suspend the player as a precautionary measure prior to a legal procedure.”

Racing beat Leicester 19-16 in the aforementioned semi-final, and will now face Saracens in the final next month. Whether Castrogiovanni has any part in that match as yet remains unclear.
