With just one week to go until the Lions squad announcement, speculation is sky-high amongst rugby fans everywhere as to whom will get the nod from Warren Gatland and his coaching team.

Rumours of ‘bolters’ are naturally abounding, but this is something which Graham Rowntree is expecting.

The Harlequins forwards coach is part of Gatland’s coaching ticket, and is expecting a real challenge from the World Cup champions.

Speaking to Nick Heath of Pundit Arena, Rowntree is expecting the tests to be played at an unprecedented standard.

“The squad we’ll be bringing will be the strongest for a long, long time. It will have to be, because this is the hardest Lions tour, probably ever, in terms of how well they’re playing, the whole country.

“We [the coaching team] are constantly talking. The squad is picked next Wednesday.

“In certain Lions selections over the years, we’ve seen some bolters.

“We saw in the Six Nations, a good tournament with a lot of guys putting their hands up. I think you know who we’re going to pick, without outside names surprising people. I think the quality and standard of players is that great, that there won’t be a huge amount of surprises, but watch this space!”
