Leicester Tigers Confirm Interest In England Fly-Half After Owen Williams Departure

Leicester Tigers v Worcester Warriors - Aviva Premiership

Although news of Owen Williams’ impending departure from the Leicester Tigers didn’t come as too much of a surprise, his move to Gloucester does come as a bit of a blow.

Williams’ ability to play at inside centre grants the Tigers additional creativity, particularly with Matt Toomua ruled out for the remainder of the season.

The Welsh playmaker also possesses a massive boot, enabling Leicester to take advantage of penalties awarded in their own half, something Williams demonstrated against Munster recently.

In the end though, Williams was lured away from Welford Road by Gloucester, who reportedly offered the fly-half a massive £400,000 per season deal. This leaves the Tigers with a hole to fill in their squad next season.

However, according to The Telegraph, Leicester have wasted no time in identifying a replacement. Indeed, despite consistent reports connecting George Ford with a move to the Sale Sharks, Aaron Mauger didn’t rule out a challenge from the Tigers.

If George is available, he is potentially someone we could look at.

We haven’t spoken to him but he is a quality player. We want competition for places right across the board.

We don’t want Freddie Burns sitting there on the throne thinking he has got it all sewn up.

Before Tigers fans become too excited at the prospect of Ford returning to Weldford Road, The Telegraph’s Mick Cleary was quick to point out that Bath could block any potential move to a top four rival such as Leicester.
