Toulon got out of jail to record a tight win over La Rochelle in the semi-final of the Top 14 last night. The three-time European Cup winners pipped La Rochelle as Anthony Belleau sent over a drop goal with the last kick of the game to send them to the final.
However, the main talking point came 10 minutes into the second half, as centre Pierre Aguillon was judged to have tip-tackled James O’Connor, causing the Australian to land on his head and shoulders and to be driven into the ground.
This was the real turning point in the match, after La Rochelle finished at the summit of the Top 14 table.
It was a bruising encounter, summed up by this clash between Mathieu Bastareaud (120kg) and Uini Antonio (155kg).
Toulon now march on to the final, where they will face the winner of Clermont Auvergne vs Racing 92, who play this evening.
