Joe Marler Receives Lengthy Suspension Over Incident Vs Sale Sharks

Joe Marler has learned his fate following his red card against Sale Sharks in Saturday’s Premiership fixture.

The Harlequins prop has been slapped with a six-week suspension for his role in the incident.

He was adjudged by the referee to have struck TJ Ioane in the head with his shoulder in the 58th minute of the 30-29 loss at the AJ Bell Stadium, while the Sale forward was attempting to move away from a ruck and did not have possession of the ball.

The six-week ban will see Marler miss England’s opening two Six Nations matches against Italy and Wales respectively, although he will be available for selection for the trip to Murrayfield when England take on Scotland on February 24.

Marler appeared before a three-person disciplinary panel in London on Tuesday evening who delivered the verdict.

The 27-year-old is no stranger to disciplinary hearings, having already served a three-match ban last year for an incident involving Wasps forward Will Rowlands that led to him being unavailable for selection for the opening autumn international against Argentina last November.

Eddie Jones must now plan for the opening couple of weekends of the upcoming Six Nations without Marler as England seek to defend their title.
