Jarryd Hayne’s Olympic Dream Dashed

The Fijian Rugby Union has today announced that former NFL and NRL star Jarryd Hayne has been unsuccessful in his quest to make the Rio Olympics as he has been omitted from the Fiji Sevens squad.

After displaying his world class in terms of athleticism and skill for the Parrametta Eels in the NRL, Hayne made an unprecedented jump between codes to the NFL to play for storied franchise the San Francisco 49ers such is his highly regarded physical attributes.

Following his NFL stint where Hayne reportedly endured a degree of home sickness, the 28-year old made another jump between codes, this time to rugby union in an attempt to represent Fiji sevens in the Rio Olympics.

In what was always going to be a monumental task in not only picking up and learning the intricacies of a new game, but also in breaking into rugby sevens’ premier team with one solitary tournament left in the series circuit, Hayne made two understandably underwhelming performances with short cameos coming against England and Wales.

Hayne took to Facebook to announce the news that a meeting was held with Fiji sevens head coach Ben Ryan in which the disappointing news was revealed to him, displaying an admirable humility in which he thanked everyone who had helped along the way and was gracious for the opportunity:

Speaking to the media Ben Ryan confirmed the discussion that was held Friday last and only had positive words for the man:

“On Friday, Jarryd and I sat down for an end of camp week talk and decided that his journey towards Rio had come to an end.

“I explained that he has had a quite amazing few weeks and committed 100% to the programme. It’s been the most physically and mentally draining “stress cycle” I have put a Fijian squad through and not once has he shirked putting in the effort.”

“At the start of his journey with the team I explained a few things to him. I could see immediately that he had a very good skill set and his fundamental skills were excellent and personally I just love his attitude to life” Ryan added.

Hayne will now have a wealth of options open to him with interest reportedly surmounting from Super Rugby side Waratahs as well as former NRL team the Parramatta Eels. One can surely expect a number of the heavy spending European sides to have taken notice of these recent developments that have transpired in Hayne’s career, making him a more than desirable target.

According to social media, Hayne’s future very much lies in the hands of Wallaby Quade Cooper who has laid down the gauntlet in a game of Fifa to determine who his future employer shall be. A fine and just moderator if there ever was one:
