Should Justin Tipuric start for the Lions in New Zealand?

With the Six Nations just weeks away and a Lions tour looming on the horizon, a lot of debate is focusing on the decisions awaiting Warren Gatland.

The Kiwi head coach led a successful tour in 2013, but he now has the considerably more difficult task of facing off against World Cup champions New Zealand.

One battle-area that could go a long way to deciding the series could be in the back-row. In that regard, there are numerous options, but it will take a major effort to best Kieran Read, Sam Cane, Ardie Savea and Co.

After Ireland and England experienced fruitful November campaigns, there was much talk about the likes of Chris Robshaw, James Haskell, CJ Stander and Sean O’Brien.

However, although Wales struggled, they still have much to offer as far as Lions selection is concerned.

One potential bolter for the Lions is Justin Tipuric. The 27-year-old has one Lions test cap to his name already but could be a real force in the side this summer.

According to a stat compiled by Wales Online, Tipuric has made a staggering 160 tackles so far this season, without missing a single one.

This defensive aptitude is something that will surely appeal to head coach Warren Gatland, who is clearly a fan of the Ospreys flanker.

Openside flanker is a highly-contested position for the Lions tour, with Sean O’Brien, Josh Van Der Flier, John Hardie, Sam Warburton and James Haskell, to name but a few, in contention.

Nonetheless, if Tipuric carries this form into the Six Nations, it will be difficult to turn him down.
