Blow For Heaslip As He Undergoes Second Back Operation

RBS 6 Nations Championship Round 1, BT Murrayfield, Scotland 4/2/2017 Scotland vs Ireland Ireland's Jamie Heaslip

Irish and Leinster number eight Jamie Heaslip has had a second operation on his back in an effort to fix the injury sustained during the warm up before Ireland’s Six Nations clash with England at Lansdowne Road.

Heaslip was expected to return during the early stages of this season but a setback in his rehabilitation means he has yet to appear for Leinster in this year’s PRO14 or Champions Cup.

The 33-year-old had a microdiscectomy (lower back operation) shortly after picking up the injury in an effort to begin his recovery,  however, complications seem to have rendered the surgery void as Heaslip went under the knife for a second time last Wednesday.

Girvan Dempsey, Leinster backs coach, said:

“Specifically, they have identified it. “They feel that are on top of it now and can get tot the bottom of it and move on”.

For a player as durable as Jamie Heaslip to require this level of surgical attention is worrying and questions over his future and retirement have been growing with no return date set for the 95 time capped Irish international.

Heaslip has nothing left to prove in rugby and has been quite proactive in creating a life for himself outside of professional sport. However, having been nominated for World Player of the Year as recently as last season, it looked as though Heaslip had much more to give for both Leinster and for Ireland.
