Jeremy Guscott Selects His ‘Home Nations XV’ From The Autumn Series

BBC Sport pundit Jeremy Guscott has filtered through Ireland, England, Wales and Scotland to come up with a Best XV following the Autumn test series.

In what was a largely successful series of fixtures, the four coaches began their World Cup preparation and did so in strong fashion, blooding a number of new faces while phasing out those who will have little to no part to play in 2019.

Guscott, a three-time tourist with the British and Irish Lions, has picked an interesting mix of the four nations for his lineup. By selecting five Scottish players, the former England international was patently very impressed by what he saw from Gregor Townsend’s side over this campaign – and in doing so has picked more Scottish players than made the initial Lions squad last summer.

Five Irish players make the grade in the fifteen, including newly-capped Bundee Aki. The Connacht centre has slotted straight into Joe Schmidt’s lineup since earning his first cap against South Africa earlier this month, and he has seemingly impressed even outside of Ireland.

England, after a professional series in which Argentina, Australia and Samoa were dispatched really without the need for top-level performances, have three players included – and Guscott concedes that the Six Nations will probably be between Eddie Jones’ side and Ireland when it comes down to it.

Finally, Wales, who had a number of injuries to contend with in their series, also have two players making the grade.
