Ireland’s Six Nations campaign opened with a loss today in Murrayfield, as Scotland edged a classic. Before the game, RTÉ analyst and former Irish out-half Ronan O’Gara stoked the flames in declaring that he would love to see Ireland “hammer” their hosts.
“I hope Ireland hammer them today because of the way Scotland behaved during the week.
“[Scotland were] too mouthy, but they can’t back it up. We were brought up on the fact that you work hard and then talk afterwards.”

Of course, Stuart Hogg led the way to a famous Scottish victory, and many of the Scottish were quick to bring up the Racing 92 coach’s comments.
Indeed, Glasgow Warriors head coach, and incoming replacement for Vern Cotter at the end of the season, Gregor Townsend retweeted the video of O’Gara making those comments.
This stirs the pot further in the aftermath of a remarkable day of rugby.
Both sides are on the road next weekend, as Scotland travel to Paris and Ireland take on Italy in Rome.
It is certainly an interesting few weeks ahead, but it is clear that Scotland proved O’Gara wrong today.
Hat-tip to RTÉ.
