Images have emerged showing Freddie Burns making contact with Harry Mallinder’s eye.
Although the Leicester Tigers were last night celebrating a 30-24 victory over the Northampton Saints, their win has since been shrouded in controversy.
In the aftermath of the game, fans were discussing Harry Thacker’s memorable try scored from just inside his own half.
The hooker showed the footwork and speed of a centre as he skipped through the Saints defence, dummied the last man, and touched down under the posts.
However since then images have emerged showing Freddie Burns making contact with Harry Mallinder’s eye. The incident occurred as both players grappled on the ground following a ruck.
Viewed in real time, it would seem that Burns moved his hand toward Mallinder’s face but made little contact. However stills of the incident illustrate that the Tigers fly half made contact with Mallinder’s eye.
While fans remain divided over the issue, as the Chris Ashton incident demonstrated, the authorities seem to be coming down hard on any potential eye gouge.
