Francois Hougaard Relinquishes His Olympic Bronze Medal

Springbok scrum half Francois Hougaard has recieved warm praise for offering his Olympic bronze medal to injured teammate Seabalo Senalta after the sevens supremo was forced out of South Africa’s quarter final and third place playoff through injury.

Senalta has been one of the Blitzbokke’s leaders since 2013 and his omission came as a major blow to their prospects what with the blistering pace and churning footwork that he brings to the frame.

In what can only be referred to as archaic and poor policy making, Senalta was deemed ineligible for a medal due to the fact he was not included in the match day 12-man squad for the two playoff games even though injured. This is despite the fact that Senalta had played in all of South Africa’s group stage games.

However in an act of solidarity, Senalta’s replacement Francois Hougaard has taken it upon himself to reward Senalta for his deserved efforts with his own medal. Speaking to sport24.co.za Senalta stated:

“It’s only fair. If the other guys come in it means that my name is taken off the list and they have to be there,” he said.

“Hougie (Hougaard) wanted to give it to me … I was like ‘No, no … you keep it. Your name is on the list.’

“He’s a very good guy and he wanted to give it to me. It’s a procedure so I only think it’s right. It doesn’t matter how much time I got or how much time he played … at the end of the day that’s how it went.”

Following the match Hougaard himself took to Twitter to reveal that he did indeed hand over the prized medal to his teammate, which has been met by a barrage of admiration online:
