England coach Eddie Jones will be without one of his major players when the men in white tour Argentina in the summer.
Harlequins have today confirmed back rower Jack Clifford will undergo surgery on his shoulder to repair a reoccurring injury sustained earlier this season.
The club also said Clifford would be ruled out of the summer tour and he is expected to be out of action for 12 weeks.
Harlequins Director of Rugby, John Kingston said: “While it is hugely disappointing for Jack to miss the conclusion of our season, the issue needed addressing immediately.
“I have no doubt Jack will do all that he can to get himself back to fitness and return all the better, and stronger for it.”
With England stalwarts James Haskell and Billy Vunipola both likely to tour with the Lions this summer, Jones would have almost certainly promoted Clifford to his starting team, with the Quins back rower capable of covering all three back row positions. He has previously started for England at number eight and played openside from the bench.
This will prove a major blow to the men in white’s plans, but will provide an opportunity to one of England’s many back row fringe players.
