Wasps have been given a boost with the news that England and Lions star Elliott Daly has signed a contract extension with the Coventry-based club.

A product of the club’s academy, the 24-year-old has made over 150 appearances since making his debut as an 18-year-old against the Exeter Chiefs back in 2010. He has so far scored over 300 points for the club.

Capped 13 times by the Red Rose since his debut against Ireland in 2016, Croydon-born Daly was one of England’s standout performers during their Six Nations triumph earlier this year.

He continued his excellent form down in New Zealand this summer, starting every Test as the Lions earned a highly creditable 1-1 series draw against the world champions.

Blessed with a booming left boot, real pace, lovely hands and a great rugby brain, the former Whitgift School pupil is also highly versatile, with the ability to play at centre, full-back and on the wing.

Despite still having a year still left on his current contract, Daly, who has been nominated for European Player of the Year two years in a row, has moved quickly to sort out his future.

Speaking about the new deal to Wasps’ official website, Daly was delighted to have extended his stay with the Premiership runners-up,

“I’m really pleased to have extended my contract with Wasps. In some ways it seems like yesterday that I made my Wasps debut,” he said.

Highlighting their Premiership final appearance last season as a ‘big step forward’, he expressed his belief that the club had the talent and mindset to continue challenging at the top level.

“As a squad, we took a big step forward last season by reaching the Aviva Premiership final. We need to improve across the board, but we have a great platform to build on and I feel our squad has the talent and mind-set to continue challenging at the highest level.”

Head coach Dai Young, who has overseen the club’s transformation from near-relegation five years ago to their Premiership final appearance in May, was justifiably over the moon to have secured Daly’s services.

“Elliott is an integral member of our squad and it is fantastic for the club that he has signed a contract extension with us,” he said.

Lauding his charge’s consistency, he added:

“He has consistently been one of our stand-out players over recent seasons and has seized every opportunity that has come his way on the back of those performances.”
