The latest edition of the Aviva Premiership season is almost upon us and ahead of the highly anticipated kick off, Harlequins rugby has been busy ensuring they will be a force to be reckoned with this term.
On Friday, the club announced that England and British and Irish Lions prop Joe Marler has committed his future to the club in a deal that will see him remain until 2021.
Following a busy summer that saw the 27-year-old on tour in New Zealand with the Lions, Marler has extended his contract with the only club he has ever played for professionally.
Already contracted until 2018, the prop has committed a further three years of his career to the club, according to a statement on the official Harlequins website.
Speaking of the deal, the England international revealed his happiness at staying at his childhood club.
“Re-signing for my childhood club has made me very happy. John Kingston has recruited strongly over the summer and he is starting to really mark his identity with this exciting group of players.
“I strongly believe we have a squad capable of going places and I’m really excited for the new season.”
Having come up through the academy system, Marler has been an integral part of the senior squad and has gone on to represent England over 50 times, as well as five caps for the Lions this summer as part of the midweek side.
He has enjoyed much success with the national side, including back-to-back Six Nations titles in 2016 and 2017, the former being a Grand Slam series victory.
Following the contract extension, Harlequins Director of Rugby John Kingston spoke in glowing terms of his loosehead prop.
“Joe is now established as one of the best loosehead props in world rugby.
“At 27, excitingly, he is probably only now coming into the peak of his potential.
“He has displayed a real commitment to the Harlequins cause over many years and as an Academy protégé, he is another member of the squad who has only ever known one club.
“This news offers a further massive boost to the squad as we prepare for the start of our 17/18 campaign.”
Following their sixth place finish in last season’s Aviva Premiership, Marler will be eager to help his side push for top honours this term, with their season opener coming against London Irish on September 2nd.
