Edinburgh Boss Cockerill Signs Blistering South Africa Prospect Van Der Merwe

Edinburgh rugby have already begun preparing for their assault on the Pro12 next season by signing the exciting young South African Duhan van der Merwe.

The arrival of Richard Cockerill at Murrayfield continues to show real sense of ambition within the club. Now with the announcement of Van der Merwe joining the fold on a two-year deal from Top 14 side Montpellier ahead of next season, fans will be hoping that they can challenge for the play-off places next term, instead of languishing near the foot of the table, as they did this season.

Reported by Planet Rugby, incoming coach Cockerill has high hopes for the 21-year-old winger,

“Duhan is a talented young player and has the potential to become a real attacking threat in our backline.

“He’s taken his chances at Montpellier in recent weeks so I’m looking forward to seeing him progress even further at Edinburgh.”

Having moved to Montpellier last summer to join the club’s academy, the 6ft 3in, 107kg South Africa U-20 international graduated to the first team during the Top 14 season, making three appearances and notching up three tries.

Ahead of his arrival in the northern capital, Van der Merwe revealed his excitement about the move.

“I’m very excited to be joining Edinburgh. It’s clear that the club has strong ambitions and I would very much like to play a part in that success.

“I’ve heard great things about the city and the people. My dealings with the club have already been very positive and I have been made to feel very welcome ahead of my arrival.

“I’m looking forward to the opportunity to express myself and build my future at Edinburgh.”

His formidable presence on the wings will certainly add some fresh teeth the to Edinburgh attack next term and, under Cockerill, will have ample opportunity to run at Pro12 defences.
