The task facing Connacht ahead of their New Year’s Eve clash with Munster is set to become more difficult, after RTE.ie confirmed that both Finlay Bealham and Danie Poolman face a race to be fit for the Pro12 derby.
Bealham and Poolman sustained head injuries during Connacht’s 23-7 defeat at the hands of Ulster in the first derby clash of the festive period on December 23, and must follow the rugby’s return to play protocols.
If both players were to be declared unavailable for Saturday night’s game, they would join an injury list that also includes Bundee Aki and Conor Carey.
Worse still, the extent of the injury Ultan Dillane suffered during the closing stages of Connacht’s defeat in the Kingspan Stadium will not be known until he undergoes a scan.
Prior to their trip to Belfast, Connacht already had 21 players out with injury, leaving Pat Lam with very few options at his disposal.
Therefore if it is the case that Bealham, Poolman and possibly even Dillane are ruled out, then Lam will only be down to the bare bones when his side take to the field against Munster.
On this week’s edition of the Oval Office Podcast, we speak to Jamie Roberts and look ahead at the festive fixture list.
