Connacht headed to Italy this weekend, expecting to come back with four, if not five points, as they faced off against Zebre.
However, the Irish province were shocked by their hosts after Zebre won out on a scoreline of 24-10.
Kieran Keane’s side endured an error-strewn first half, as their Italian opposition headed for the dressing room at half-time, 3-0 up.
However, the match came to life in the second period, as Tom Farrell capitalised on a defensive error to touch down, and give the visitors a one-point lead, at 7-6.
The sides then exchanged penalties, but after that it was all Zebre, who got their noses in front and didn’t look back, winning out by 14 points.
This leaves Connacht in fifth place in Conference A of the PRO14, just two points clear of Zebre who denied them even a losing bonus point.
The western province face into a big fortnight, as they look to maintain their spot at the top of Pool 5 in the European Challenge Cup with a double-header against French outfit Brive.
However, Keane will be fully aware that his side will need to significantly raise their standards if they are to get a win in France next weekend.
