What a month it has been for Bundee Aki!
Ireland completed a clean sweep during the November tests with victories over South Africa, Fiji and Argentina in recent weeks. Joe Schmidt’s side now split back to the provinces before plotting an assault on the Six Nations Championship.
As the country continues to build towards the 2019 World Cup in Japan, this will be remembered as a landmark series, given the emergence of a new wave of talent including Adam Byrne, James Ryan, and Jacob Stockdale, not to mention the first cap for Bundee Aki.
There was a degree of displeasure in certain quarters surrounding the residency rules allowing players to represent a country, but the second he pulled the green shirt on, he was met with overwhelming support.
The 27-year-old certainly backed up the hype by putting in big performances against the Springboks and Pumas, and he is certainly in Schmidt’s plans for the Six Nations. However, there is serious competition as Robbie Henshaw, Jared Payne and Garry Ringrose will all be vying for spots in the midfield.
Nonetheless, it has been a remarkable month for Aki, and he took to social media to thank everyone for their support.
“God is good… ?? great way to finish the series. Its an honour to wear the green jersey, the feeling you get while wearing the jersey is hard to explain. Thank you everyone for making me feel like one of your own. ?”
Aki now returns to Connacht for a busy schedule in December and January, which includes two games with Brive, a St Stephen’s Day clash with Ulster before trips to the RDS and Thomond Park.
