BT Sport have secured the rights to broadcast European Champions Cup and European Challenge Cup in the UK and Ireland from 2018/19. Currently, the coverage is split between Sky Sports and BT, but this move will see Sky frozen out of the picture, as the competition moves to one pay-TV broadcaster.

BT Sport will now show up to 134 matches per season across nine weekends, as the best club sides in Europe face off.

One season remains in the current deal, which will see Sky and BT share the coverage.

There is also the possibility of free-to-air coverage, so broadcasters in Ireland and the UK are still in with a chance of showing the games, and will be able to bid for the rights to show the games.

Speaking at the announcement, Vincent Gaillard, CEO of the EPCR, revealed his delight at the news.

“We are delighted to move to a single pay-TV platform for European club rugby with a premium broadcaster in BT Sport, who share our commitment to the promotion of our competitions. We look forward to further developing that relationship to continually create outstanding rugby experiences for fans across the United Kingdom and Ireland.”
