Chaos erupted at a French amateur match as almost every player on the pitch became embroiled in a mass brawl.
Stade Niçois and Bédarrides Rugby, competitors in the fourth tier of the French rugby pyramid, saw their encounter turn somewhat ugly when a Niçois player threw his opponent to the ground, which in turn saw the fallen Bédarrides player robustly defended by his teammates.
What followed was a major scuffle that saw not only pretty much every player get involved, but some spectators too:
Niçois coach David Bolgashvili defended the action of his player, insisting that the tackle was a fair one and pointing the finger at opposition fans for their part in the melee, telling Nice-Matin:
“There was an aggressive tackle by one of our players, but it was fair in the eyes of the referee. The Bedarrides players then started the brawl and we fought like dogs.’
“There is no safety standard that is respected, there is only one handrail that separates the spectators from the field.
‘The gate was open, and spectators ran on to the pitch to strike our players.”
Once everyone had calmed down, play was allowed to continue and Bédarrides ended up winning by a scoreline of 26-20.
