Bath are looking to bolster their squad after a disappointing season.
With rumours circulating over Kyle Eastmond’s imminent departure from The Rec, Bath have reportedly made an offer for Toulon centre, Maxime Mermoz.
Although the 35 times capped French international is contracted to Toulon until June 2017, Mourad Boudjellal has stated that he would be willing to release the Mermoz this summer, stoking Bath’s interest according to Midi Olympique.
Although Bordeaux Begles had offered the 29 year old a three year deal, Mermoz turned down their offer earlier this week. While this would appear to pave the way for Bath to sign Mermoz, the centre recently told Rugbyrama that he wanted to see out the remainder of his contract with Toulon.
Nevertheless, given that Mermoz is competing against Ma’a Nonu, Mathieu Bastareaud and Matt Giteau for a place in Toulon’s starting XV, the French international might be enticed to the Rec this summer.
Mermoz’s attributes and experience could complement George Ford and Jonathan Joseph perfectly. Potentially making Bath more dangerous next season.
However, with question marks hanging over the composition of Bath’s coaching ticket next season, a deal might yet be far from certain.
