Austin Healey’s Lions Test XV Features A Man Who Isn’t Even On Tour

Writing in The Telegraph this week, Austin Healey certainly wasn’t afraid to have a right pop at Warren Gatland’s squad selection.

Having suffered a freak injury after running into Conor Murray’s elbow last week, Stuart Hogg was forced to withdraw from the Lions tour with doctors fearing that the Scotsman could lose his sight should he rush his return.

After the dreadful news was confirmed, it was reported that Lions coach, Warren Gatland, would not be drafting in a replacement and that he was happy with the players already at his disposal at this stage of the tour.

However, selecting his Lions XV for the first test against the All Blacks on the 24th of June, Austin Healey said that a man who isn’t even on the tour should now be starting at full back.

“Mike Brown isn’t in the squad but if the Lions are playing a Warren Gatland style of rugby then he goes straight into my Test team – there is no-one left in the squad who is as dependable and solid at full-back as he is.

I’ve also gone for a really big pack, with Iain Henderson at flanker, on the basis that the most successful team against the All Blacks are usually South Africa, who base their game on physicality up front.”

Although Brown at full back is a pretty outrageous suggestion in and of itself (especially given the fact that the Englishman is currently in Argentina with England), Henderson at flanker is arguably just as absurd with the Irishman having only featured in the second row for the Lions thus far.
