Are The Springboks On The Verge Of Appointing A New Coach?

Bookmakers have stopped taking bets on the identity of the new Springboks coach.

After South Africa’s defeat to Japan at the Rugby World Cup, Heyneke Meyer was always going to find it difficult to hold onto the Springbok’s coaching job.

In the aftermath of the defeat, some even argued only winning the tournament would save Meyer from the sack. However, the Springboks had to settle for third place and as a result, Meyer found himself under intense scrutiny.

It cannot come as too much as a surprise therefore, to hear that one of South Africa’s leading bookmakers,, has suspended betting on Allister Coetzee replacing Meyer.

Coetzee’s odds have steadily decreased from 8/1 to 9/4 over recent days, according to A scenario reminiscent of the days leading up to Eddie Jones’ appointment as England coach.

Although the South African Rugby Union have denied making contact with Coetzee, rumours of his appointment continue to circulate.

Coetzee currently coaches Japanese side Kobe Steel Kobelco Steelers, but reportedly has an exit clause in his contract if a high profile job was to be offered.

In any event, Meyer’s fate will be decided at a South African Rugby Union’s General Council on December 11.
