This week’s AIL Game of the Week is St. Mary’s vs Old Belvedere. Kevin Hegarty was there to capture all the action
It was an emotional game for Mary’s as it was number 10 Gavin Dunne aka ‘The Kid’s’ last game after six years with the club. The boys went down in the beginning and the battle was intense.
The opening score of the game came from a Shane McDonald penalty to make the score 3-0 to Belvedere after 16 minutes.
Old Belvedere headed into half time with a 6-0 lead following a penalty after 25 minutes, which was again kicked over by McDonald.
After half time, Mary’s gained the momentum and scored a great try, pick and go, from the forwards and Brian McGovern touched down to bring them back into the game.
As if the script was written for Gavin himself, he steps up midway through the second half and sends a drop goal over the posts to put them into the lead for the first time in the game.
There was no stopping them now. They held out the Belvo attack with a massive defensive effort to win the game. Cheers of joy all around and an emotional tear in the eye of the ‘Kid’.
A great day of rugby!
Final score St. Mary’s 13 – 9 Belvedere
