Adam Jones Selects An Interesting Looking Lions XV

Australia v British & Irish Lions: Game 2

Debate surrounding lions selection has already begun.

Despite the fact that the Lions will not tour New Zealand for another 13 months, debates as to the possible make up of the test team have been raging for some time.

In the aftermath of the World Cup, some of Sky’s pundits selected touring sides that did not contain many England players. Given their performance at the tournament, that was understandable.

However, fast forward seven months, and any potential Lions starting XV would be dominated by Eddie Jones’ Grand Slam winners.

This of course demonstrates the folly of selecting a Lions team so far in advance of the tour. Indeed, Scott Quinnell picked Paul O’Connell is his team.

Nevertheless, this summer the race for a place in the touring party will begin to heat up, with each of the home nations facing tough end of season tours.

If Wales were to win a test New Zealand, Sam Warburton and Alun Wyn Jones would have to be considered among the leading contenders to Captain the Lions next summer.

A series win in Australia would underline England’s position as the northern hemisphere’s leading side, and enable them dominate the touring party.

Likewise, many of Ireland’s players have the opportunity to demonstrate that they merit inclusion, while Scotland face the pressure of having to beat Japan or risk losing valuable World Cup seeding points.

As a result, it was interesting to read Adam Jones’ Lions XV on Wales Online.
