Watch: Ulster’s Paddy Jackson Shows Real Class With Concern For Badly Shaken Darren Sweetnam

Sound man, Paddy Jackson…

Munster’s Darren Sweetnam played just about the smallest role possible in his side’s titanic and thrilling Pro12 battle with Ulster at Thomond Park yesterday.

The 23-year-old winger had to be taken off in just the second minute with a possible concussion, but the incident that left him unable to continue happened even earlier than that, mere seconds into the game.

Sweetnam had charged at Ulster fullback Charles Pitau as the former All Black claimed the ball from kick-off. However, Pitau turned away from the tackle and Swetnam’s head seemed to collide with his 25-year-old opponent’s hip. Sweetnam bounced off the New Zealander and hit the deck hard. The Cork player was on his feet again moments later, but his sense of equilibrium had been badly compromised and he stumbled around in an obvious daze.

You can see the collision and the effect it had on Sweetnam in the video below. What you will also see is a really admirable act from Ulster fly-half Paddy Jackson, who takes a moment to check on his shaken foe though play is continuing around them.

Andrew Conway came on to replace the injured Sweetnam and Munster went on to record a two-point victory over the northern province by a score of 22-20. Paddy Jackson’s good deed was not rewarded with good fortune, as he saw a late drop-goal attempt sail agonizingly wide.
