The Melbourne Rebels are in with a strong shout to claim a Super Rugby playoff spot after overcoming the Sunwolves 52-7 in Tokyo.
The Rebels are currently second in the Australian conference and failed to overtake the Brumbies who themselves recorded a win over the Bulls in Canberra this weekend.
The Rebels take on rivals the Waratahs next weekend and a win there could propel them to the top of the conference. Regardless, a win against Daryl Gibson’s side will go a long way to securing a wildcard spot if the Rebels don’t manage to overtake the Brumbies with three games remaining.
Their latest victory came in Tokyo and in a one-sided affair, Quade Cooper really stood out.
The out-half has been having a promising season with the Melbourne-based franchise and the calls for him to be selected in the Wallabies World Cup squad will only increase with performances like this.
One of his main highlights was this glorious pass en route to a try by Dane Haylett-Petty.
Copper fires a pass out from midfield to an on-rushing Marika Koroibete who runs the length of the field before offloading to Haylett-Petty who scores the try.
The move is all about the pass, however, as Cooper gets the perfect height and pace on the ball so that Koroibete doesn’t have to break stride.
It’s quite reminiscent of Finn Russell’s famous pass against England at Murrayfield in the 2018 Six Nations.
