As if things couldn’t get any worse for the Lions in their Super Rugby final against the Crusaders.
The Lions were 12-0 down in the opening quarter after conceding two tries, one of which included a huge hit on Elton Jantjies in the build-up to the first try.
The Lions got three points back through the boot of Jantjies but the Crusaders defence was formidable in the first half as the Lions failed to come away with points after many visits to the opposition’s 22.
However, any hope of the Lions making a comeback seems to be gone after Kwagga Smith was shown a straight red card for making contact with David Kaetau Havili in the air.
It was reckless and showed a huge level of irresponsibility from Smith who needed to pull out of the tackle or at least make an attempt to protect Havili after contact was made.
The officials had no choice but to send Smith off and the likelihood of the Lions securing a Super Rugby title look all but gone.

Update: Kieran Read has just scored under the posts to extend the Crusaders’ lead to 22-3 after 43 minutes played.
