All eyes were on the Ricoh Arena this afternoon as Billy Vunipola made his long-awaited comeback from injury.
Vunipola has been out with a knee injury he picked up in September when his side romped to a 43-13 victory over Sale Sharks. The timeline for recovery was put at four months meaning that Vunipola would be expected back at the end of January and as a result, would be going into the Six Nations short on match fitness.
However, he returned earlier than expected today in Saracens 38-15 win over Wasps in Coventry. Any fears that Vunipola would take some time to get back up to speed were put to bed as the powerful 25-year-old put in an industrious and dominating performance for Mark McCall’s side.
Vunipola lasted 70 minutes and came second in the carrying charts for his side as he made two clean line breaks and beat four defenders after 12 carries.
One of which helped set up a try for Schalk Burger.
Vunipola now has further opportunity to get back to his best before England’s opening match of the Six Nations against Italy. Sarries face into back-to-back Champions Cup fixtures against the Ospreys and Northampton over the next two weekends.
