Enisei-STM bowed out of this season’s Challenge Cup when they lost 19-33 to Premiership outfit the Newcastle Falcons with the English side securing a home quarter-final against Brive.
It was a forgettable campaign for the Russian side, who recorded 0 victories in the pool stages and they managed just one losing bonus point after six fixtures.
Their supporters did have something to cheer in their final fixture against Newcastle however, they did score 19 points against Dean Richards’ side and took the lead in the game when Federico Gilberti crashed over for the game’s first try after just seven minutes on the clock.
The finish was a little unorthodox from Gilberti, his spatial awareness seemed to have evaded him as when he collected the ball after kicking it through along the crowd, he crashed into the post but still managed to control the ball to score the try.
The move began when a Newcastle player was smashed in the tackle which led to an inaccurate pass out the back-door. The Enisei defence pushed up hard and grubber kicked the ball towards the Newcastle line only for Gilberti to collect, smash off the post and dot the ball down.
