Who can forget the week building up to the final Test of the 2013 British and Irish Lions tour against the Wallabies?
Of course, Brian O’Driscoll was dropped for that game with Jamie Roberts returning from injury and Jonathan Davies preferred for the outside centre position. There was considerable outrage at the Irish star’s exclusion (mostly in Ireland, mind), however, Warren Gatland’s gamble paid off as the Lions romped home to a series victory.
Although it’s over four years since these events took place, they still hold a place in the minds of rugby supporters as it caused significant debate at the time.
At a recent Off The Ball Roadshow, O’Driscoll and Gatland were sitting just feet apart as O’Driscoll recalls the week building up to that final Test. He describes the fact he was up for media duties that week as a sure sign he was going to start in that final Test and of course, the moment Gatland and Rob Howley approached him on the Wednesday to tell him the devastating news.
It’s great viewing and certainly worth a few minutes of your time, even just for the Welsh head coach’s reaction.
