The Lions found themselves 12-10 down at half time but it has been a much-improved performance from the tourists. The Lions’ forwards had been incredibly dominant, especially at scrum time and you felt that if Warren Gatland’s side can cut down on their indiscipline then they would have had a great opportunity to claim a victory at Eden Park.
The Blues got the opening try and Rieko Ioane went over in the corner and outpaced Jack Nowell but to be fair to the Exeter Chiefs man, it was a defensive malfunction which led to the score. The Lions got back into the game with a converted CJ Stander try which came off the back of a rolling maul which was converted by Leigh Halfpenny.
Halfpenny also added a penalty to have the Lions leading going into the break, only for Sonny Bill Williams to get a try on the stroke of half-time. The Blues had a penalty which came back off the posts, only for Williams to react quickest and dot down despite the despairing efforts of some of the Lions players.
A bit fortuitous, perhaps, but a blow to the Lions all the same and their subsequent second half performance contributed to their defeat.
