The Queensland Reds have defeated the Melbourne Rebels 37-23 at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane in an Australian Super Rugby derby.
The defeat for the Rebels means that the Waratahs are all but certain to clinch first place in the Australian conference and automatic progression into the Super Rugby quarter-finals.
The loss also means that Dave Wessells’ side faces an uphill task of securing one the few coveted ‘wildcard’ spots to reach the playoffs.
A penalty try and tries from Izack Rodda, Filipo Daugunu and Jono Lance secured the bonus-point victory for Brad Thorn’s men. The Rebels on the other hand only managed to score two tries and 13 points from the boot of Wallaby Reece Hodge.
One of those three-pointers came in rather odd circumstances as Hodge was lining up to take a +30m penalty only for the ball to fall of the tee twice as he ran up to strike it.
After the second fall and time running out, Hodge acted quickly to land a superb drop-goal from the same distance to give his side three points.
