This is peak Warren Gatland.
Warren Gatland is certainly a happy man right now. Although the Lions failed to win the series, he brought a team together to take on the world champions in their home patch and levelled the series. An achievement which should be lauded.
There were so many different narratives throughout this Lions tour, one of which was the NZ media’s portrayal of the Lions head coach which culminated in the NZ Herald leading with a depiction of Gatland as a clown on the front page of their sports section.
This act was condemned by many, and rightly so. It was a personal attack and one which had no place in rugby. Nevertheless, it happened and although it was mostly forgotten, as the tour reached the third Test, it still left a sour taste in the mouth.
Gatland, when entering the post-match press conference after the nail-biting third Test, wore a clown nose in a not so subtle bit of payback to those who have been criticising him.
