The Newcastle Falcons have secured their highest place finish in the Aviva Premiership since the playoffs have been introduced.
Newcastle, led by Director Of Rugby Dean Richards, have finished in fourth place in this season’s Premiership campaign and they will face the Exeter Chiefs at Sandy Park in two weeks time to reach the Premiership final.
The Falcons lost to Wasps at the weekend but the result probably won’t worry supporters too much considering they made eight changes to the side which beat the Leicester Tigers at Welford Road last week.
Last season, Newcastle finished in eighth place after notching up 10 wins and no one would have predicted how well they would do this season.
When you look at the total points secured by each side from each season, it really hammers home just how far the Falcons have come this year.

Newcastle totalled 22 points in 2013/14, 34 points in 2014/15, 27 points in 2015/16, 49 points in 2016/17 and this season, they have secured a whopping 63 points and 14 wins.
The above table of points also highlights the dramatic fall from clubs such as Northampton Saints and Harlequins in recent seasons. Long to be considered Premiership heavyweights, those two clubs have big jobs on their hands next season to get back to the upper echelons of England’s top club rugby competition.
