Jack Stafford In Line For European Bow As Munster Sweat On Mathewson

21-year-old Jack Stafford could make his European debut for Munster this weekend when his side travels to Sandy Park to take on Exeter in the Heineken Champions Cup on Saturday.

Stafford, who made his senior debut for Munster last season in the November win over Zebre, is highly rated in the Munster setup and his form for the ‘A’ side in the Celtic Cup so far this season has generated excitement in the province.

The Wexford man, who attended Glenstal Abbey as a student, could be sprung from the bench against Rob Baxter’s side on Saturday due to the concern over the fitness of kiwi nine, Alby Mathewson.

Mathewson picked up a knee injury in the 33-20 defeat to Leinster at the weekend and Johann van Graan told the gathered media today at the University of Limerick today that he is a worry.

“Yes [a worry], hopefully, we’ll know later today or tomorrow, but he is a concern, yes.”
Van Graan ruled out any notion of Conor Murray being available this weekend and with Neil Cronin and James Hart also sidelined with injuries, Duncan Williams and Stafford look to be the two men involved on Saturday.
“No [Murray availability].” van Graan said.
“Duncan Williams – he also took a hit to the leg, but he should be fine. We’ve got Jack Stafford who played pretty well for the As, he should be the next guy in line.
“Like I said, we’ll give Alby as much time until we know more. That’s the beauty of the squad. The next guy is in and you’ve got to perform.”
