Sprinting Star Aaron Sexton Among Exciting Ulster Academy Intake

Ulster Rugby have announced their Academy intake for next season and it includes Irish Schools sprint record holder Aaron Sexton.

The 18-year-old broke the Irish Schools record in the 100m and 200m recently but he has made the decision to focus on rugby full-time instead of athletics.

Despite his age and that he is now only entering his first year of the Academy, Sexton has a decent level of experience.

He was Ulster A’s top try scorer in last season’s Celtic Cup while also featuring in the northern province’s pre-season friendly with Gloucester and was the 2017 Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Player of the Year.

Other Academy recruits include back-three player Conor Ranklin who won the 2018 Danske Bank Ulster Schools Cup with Campbell College.

Hooker Tom Stewart also joins the Academy having captained Ulster at U18 level and recently winning the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Player of the Year.

Irish-qualified centre Hayden Hyde joins Ulster from Harlequins and prop Callum Reid makes the step up after spending a season in Ulster’s sub-academy.

Nine players from Ulster’s academy last season have received upgraded contracts and they include Robert Baloucoune, Angus Curtis, James Hume, Angus Kernohan, Michael Lowry, Zack McCall, Eric O’Sullivan, Tom O’Toole and Marcus Rea.

Ulster Rugby Academy Manager, Kieran Campbell said:

“Last year was a really successful season in terms of the contribution Academy players made at senior level, which is ultimately what we are here to do – develop players of the requisite quality to represent Ulster and Ireland.

“We still believe there is significant opportunity to grow again this year and we are excited about the new batch of players joining our programme. Each year we are driving increased standards so I congratulate those who have been awarded a place in the Academy and look forward to seeing how they develop into the future.”
