Joe Schmidt has confirmed that a number of Ireland’s top players who have yet to see action so far in the current preseason, will play a part in the final warm-up game against Wales on Saturday.
Keith Earls, Robbie Henshaw and Johnny Sexton have yet to see any minutes this summer but it looks like they will be involved against Warren Gatland’s side this weekend.
Schmidt also provided an update on Cian Healy who injured his ankle against England. The Leinster loosehead has trained this week and could be involved on Saturday.
“Those three guys trained really well today,” Schmidt told the media at Ireland’s base in Carton House.
“Cian, Robbie and Keith – they have trained the last couple of days and have looked sharp. The only one who is still in doubt is Joey (Carbery) really. He’d have to train fully on Thursday to be included in the match squad. He won’t start.
“Johnny will start at 10 so we’ll see how he goes.
“He’s (Carbery) going to do a little bit tomorrow and that will lead into training on Thursday and if he can’t train on Thursday, he won’t be involved. That would be an unnecessary risk.”
Sexton, who is set to feature from the off on Saturday, admits that it has been a good but frustrating preseason.
“Looking forward to it, it’s been a good pre-season, frustrating obviously, picking up the knock at a bad time, yeah, looking forward to it now.”
Ireland’s final warm-up game before they depart for Japan kicks off at 2 pm on Saturday.
